• Portage Animal Welfare Society Inc. is a non-profit, charitable organization which is operated exclusively by volunteers and is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors.
• Our Mission: To improve the quality of life of stray and abandoned companion animals.
• Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) began in 2005 in Portage la Prairie, Mb when the high euthanasia rates in the local pound became evident. The concern and motivation to rescue, vet, and find good homes for the unclaimed dogs and cats has expanded to promoting responsible pet ownership and a low-cost cat spay & neuter program. After many years of fundraising, April 2023 saw the move from the small aging shelter (est. 2014) into a larger, brighter, happier building! This vastly improved atmosphere benefits both the feline occupants and the volunteer caregivers.
• The new building is home to most of the adoptable cats. Future plans include completing the dog area, with an outdoor run, that will be able to temporarily hold dogs on a case-by-case basis. The parking lot and landscaping are on the to-do list as well! The new, more spacious facility gives potential adopters a chance to come and spend some time with an animal before adopting; as well as allows for more public interaction and community engagement.
• PAWS relies solely on foster homes for all dogs that come into the rescue. We are in desperate need of more foster homes in order to continue to rescue dogs from the pound. PAWS provides everything needed for the animals – food, all supplies, as well as covering veterinarian costs. If you’re interested in fostering, please contact PAWS via Facebook or email. • Fundraising is crucial for any non-profit organization and PAWS is no different. We actively fundraise to help us pay for such things as our new building, animal vetting, supplies, training & boarding, marketing, and administrative costs. Some of our fundraising events include a current 50/50 raffle, a recent trivia night, Furball social, garage sales, walk-a-thons, and more! Community members are generous with donations and businesses are outstanding with their support by hosting events and donating the proceeds. Animal welfare touches the hearts of so many!

• Winnipeg Kinsmen donate $15,000 to Habitat For Humanity Manitoba to help fund largest build in Habitat Manitoba’s history!

  • Funds will be directed to the largest project in Habitat Manitoba’s history – a 55-home development on Pandora Avenue West
  • Founded in 1987, Habitat Manitoba is a nonprofit housing organization that believes everyone deserves a safe and decent place to live. We mobilize communities to help low-income working families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. With the help of volunteers, donors, and community partners, we have helped over 500 families and more than 1,400 children in the Province, including Kenora, Ontario.
  • Habitat for Humanity Manitoba is an independent, not-for-profit charity, building affordable housing and promoting homeownership. We mobilize local volunteers, community members, and donors, and corporate partners, seeking to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.
  • Habitat Manitoba is proceeding with the largest development in the history of the organization’s 35 years. It is located on Pandora Ave. West in Transcona. Situated on three acres of land, Habitat Manitoba will build 11 blocks of five townhouses each, for a total of 55 homes. The project will house approximately 275 people, including 175 children. These homes will be exceptionally energy efficient and when completed will have a carbon-free zero footprint.
  • How Habitat Works for families: Families purchase an affordable home from Habitat for Humanity Manitoba with no down payment required. Since families wouldn’t qualify for a conventional mortgage, we provide a Habitat for Humanity Manitoba mortgage that removes the barriers to homeownership. We offer a fixed, 15-year renewable mortgage with zero interest so that families can maximize the equity they build while raising their children.
